SCRC Makes a Difference on November 13, 2008

On November 13 in San Juan Capistrano, a group of SCRC members contributed a day’s labor to support Habitat for Humanity, a non-profit organization that assists needy families by building homes and providing ongoing education and support.

The San Juan build consists of 27 total homes with 14 designated for military families – a part of "Habitat for Heroes, Foundations for Families." In order to be considered as a participant in this program and have the opportunity to live in a Habitat Home, the individuals/families must be legal U.S. residents, earn a steady income between 30%-80% of the Orange County median income, and be credit worthy. One of the new owners, Susana Mendez, a single Mom, worked alongside the SCRC Team, fulfilling her commitment of contributing at least 500 personal "sweat equity" hours.

Major tasks for the SCRC Team included drywall preparation and installation, door hanging, framing, etc. Most of the workers had little or no experience in these areas and had the opportunity to learn a great deal about home construction and the use of power tools!

In addition to the physical labor contribution, the SCRC also contributed substantial funding to Habitat to support their incredible efforts.

About Habitat for Humanity...

Habitat for Humanity is a quality organization dedicated to transform neighborhoods and change lives. Habitat builds and renovates homes in the local Orange County community using donated funding, labor, services, and materials. Service providers such as architects, contractors, landscapers, etc., all donate their time. The only funds that are supplied by the Government is for the purchase of land. Each Habitat low-income family that applies for the program is carefully screened and once accepted volunteers 500 hours of "sweat equity" to help build their own home or help build another family's home. The home is then purchased for a 1% down payment, closing costs and a long-term zero-interest mortgage. Habitat is also involved in educating the families regarding home maintenance, finance, education, etc. Please visit the the Habitat for Humanity web site for additional information.
