Community Support

SCRC is proud to be an official non profit association supporting the communities in which we live and work. Our Tax ID number for deduction if needed is 90-0716863. 


SCRC is committed to actively supporting our community through our charitable causes. The relocation community has so much to offer people in need and for 2019 SCRC is proud to partner with and support Mercy House. In addition, each year SCRC allows its members to nominate a charity that they are involved with or that is close to their heart. The Board will vote on which Charity it will support and make a donation on SCRC's behalf. 
 



About Mercy House:


Mercy House is a 501c3 nonprofit organization with a mission to be a leader in ending homelessness by providing a unique system of dignified housing opportunities, programs, and supportive services. Mercy House provides for a variety of homeless populations which includes families, adult men and women, mothers and their children, persons living with HIV/AIDS, individuals overcoming substance addictions, and some who are physically and mentally disabled. In order to deal with the complexities of homelessness, Mercy House operates an in-house continuum of care where services are available to help individuals and families at any stage of homelessness. We do this in three different ways: outreach, shelters, and permanent housing.

Founded by Father Jerome T. Karcher, Mercy House has been a lead provider of care for those experiencing homelessness in Southern California and beyond for over 30 years. We strive to assist our residents in the areas of economic, emotional, and spiritual well-being in order to enhance self-esteem and a sense of personal pride. We value accountability, integrity, and self-sufficiency. The dignity of the individual person and the corresponding respect that follows is the guiding principle of our service to the homeless person. Though the shape of Mercy House has changed over the years, from a single transitional shelter serving 10 men at a time, to an organization that spans counties and serves thousands of people each year, our goal remains the same -- to end the homelessness of those who enter our system of care.

At the discretion of The Board, an annual charitable contribution up to $1,000 can be made to benefit an SCRC member’s preferred charity. The member should provide the name of the charity, purpose/mission statement of the charity as well as the rationale for the request subject to applicable privacy laws.  All requests are to be submitted to the Board by the President prior to October 1 of the current year, to be paid in the following year. Submissions will be reviewed at the next board meeting, and a check will be presented to the member at the following meeting.  In the event that no member requests are received by October 1, the contribution for that period will be waived. A minimum waiting period of 2 calendar years should apply before a charity can be re-considered for subsequent donations.

 

SCRC requires that the proposed charity meet specific criteria to be considered:


·         Be previously designated a tax-exempt non-profit organization or otherwise designated as a bona fide charitable organization

·         Show program capability, sound fiscal policies, responsible management, evidence of long-range planning and effective use of volunteers

·         Have a competent, active board of directors or similar governing body providing sound

·         policies and guidance to the organization and its members

·         Produce a budget, financial statements and a plan for funding beyond the period covered by the proposed contribution

·         Show a method of evaluating the results of the proposed project

 

In addition, SCRC requires:

·         That the individual nominating the charity is a member in good standing of SCRC.

·         There are no deals that are contingent (either in fact or in appearance) upon the granting of the charitable aid

·         Normal due diligence has been conducted to verify that the charity is legitimate and reputable, and financially stable

SCRC Scholarships


SCRC is sponsoring a scholarship program for current high school seniors who have relocated to Southern California. The one-time award of $1,500 for each scholarship will be presented to two area high school seniors in the summer of the current year.  The award will be sent directly to the college (2-year or 4-year) or university that the student will be attending to assist with tuition or any other applicable expenses.


SCRC will select a scholarship winner based on the strength of the eligible applicant’s total completed application that includes academic performance, extra-curricular activities, and an essay addressing the impact relocation has had on their life and impactful skills or life experiences developed as a result of the relocation.

Eligible applicants must meet these requirements:


Currently a senior in good standing in a greater Southern California area high school. Southern California is deemed as the counties of Imperial, Kern, Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo and Ventura counties.


Applicant has previously relocated and changed schools due to this relocation. For purposes of this scholarship, relocation is considered moving more than 50-miles away from their home or current place of residence, either indefinitely or for a period of time longer than one year.


A cumulative minimum grade point average of 3.0 on a scale of 4.0 (or equivalent achievement on a different scale)

Applications must be submitted no later than June 30th of this year.


The scholarship winner may be asked to present the essay in person at the SCRC summer conference in August, or at a recorded video conference meeting. The scholarship will be announced at the SCRC Summer Conference.
